About Us
Meet Nathan
Hoolan’s co-founder, kitesurfer, windsurfer, snowboarder, skier, product manager and developer.
The idea for Hoolan was born after yet more banter on the beach about who had jumped the highest that day. A windsurfer then kitesurfer for many years, Nathan had long felt the need for a tracking and analysis app for wind and water sports that didn’t require attaching expensive hardware to your board or taking a phone out on the water, was easy to use, gave in-depth, tailored stats for the session as a whole (jumps, speed and distance) and allowed you to share the stoke with friends.
In 2021, joined by Lucy who shared his vision and enthusiasm, he decided to make it happen.

Meet Lucy
Hoolan’s co-founder, kitesurfer, skier, snowboarder, active sports marketeer, product manager and designer.
To us it was clear that smartwatches were the future of wind and watersports performance tracking. Not only do they have the sophisticated motion and gps sensors to be able to track and deliver accurate performance statistics, but their many other features mean that riders can see their live stats on the water, track their health data, make SOS calls, pay for post-session beers and so much more….
With Nathan’s coding and technical skills, Lucy’s background in marketing and design, the support of some brilliant minds in GPS, physics, and app development, plus a dedicated team of testers, we launched Hoolan for Apple Watch and iPhone in May 2023 — followed by Garmin and Android in January 2025.
Our Mission
Hoolan has been founded on in-depth research with kitesurfers, wingfoilers, windsurfers, sailors and surfers around the globe.
Our mission is to create the ultimate watersports tracking experience by combining a focus on usability and accuracy, with cutting edge technology, proven algorithms and clear design. Our shared passion for wind and watersports is what drives us to continually improve and innovate.
We want to make tracking your sessions, analysing your performance and sharing the stoke with your crew as accessible (ease and cost-wise), as accurate and as useful as possible for all levels of kitesurfer, wingfoiler and windsurfer and, in time, the wider water and wind sports community.

Hoolan /ˈhuː.læn/ noun
Hoolan is an old Scottish word for a wild, howling wind. When it's hoolan, we're out there - skimming over the ocean, flying through the air, or charging down the line. See you out there!
